Experience Scotland

August 2-11, 2009

From deep glacial lakes shrouded in mist to rugged, heather-covered Highland hills, Scotland’s landscape sets a scenic stage for epic adventure. Through the centuries, an intricate blend of Celtic, Norse and Norman cultures have intermingled like the weave of a tartan pattern to fashion quaint, cobblestoned villages and fairy-tale castles. Discover the very best of Scotland by walking in the wake of freedom fighter William Wallace, tracing the pathways of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and leaving your own footprints along the “bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.”

EXCLUSIVE HIGHLIGHTS • Experience Scotland’s historic Highlands, picturesque west coast islands and the cosmopolitan city of Edinburgh. • Enjoy fine accommodations in Oban and Stirling. • Admire two of Scotland’s most famous Highland lakes: tranquil Loch Lomond and mysterious Loch Ness. • See four of Scotland’s most fabled castles: Duart Castle, Eilean Donan Castle, Stirling Castle and Edinburgh Castle. • Visit St. Andrews, internationally renowned as the Home of Golf. • Attend colorful folkloric performances that showcase traditional Scottish music and dance. MEALS • Enjoy an extensive meal program, including eight breakfasts, three lunches and six dinners, in addition to in-flight dining service. Tea or coffee is included with all meals. Take advantage of leisure time to try the local cuisine independently. • Sample authentic regional specialties at featured local restaurants. • Attend a special welcome reception. • Gather for a farewell reception and graduation ceremony, followed by a farewell dinner at the hotel.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Depart your gateway for Glasgow, Scotland, aboard scheduled jet service.(Provided for Air Package participants only.)
Day 2 Upon arrival, transfer to Oban and the Oban Caledonian Hotel. (Transfer provided for Air Package participants only.) Afternoon tea is served at the hotel. Tonight, join fellow travelers at a welcome reception with a performance by a bagpiper and Highland dancers. Dinner follows with a traditional haggis ceremony.
Day 3 Excursion: Isle of Mull. Travel by ferry to the Isle of Mull, where your first glimpse of Duart Castle, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, will be from the water. Take a tour of the 13th-century fortress. Local Flavor: Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Afterward, continue to the picturesque fishing village of Tobermory. Educational Focus: History of the Highlands. Independent Exploration: This afternoon in Tobermory, admission to the Mull Museum is included, so you may wander through the exhibits at your own pace. Local Flavor: After a hearty Highland dinner, watch a folkloric show in Oban.
Day 4 Excursion: Isle of Skye. Travel along the southwestern shore of Loch Ness and stop at romantic Eilean Donan Castle. Cross the Skye Bridge to the island and visit the Clan Donald Centre at Armadale Castle to learn about ancient Gaelic life. Return by ferry to Mallaig and continue along the scenic Road to the Isles. Pause in Glenfinnan on Loch Shiel at the monument to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. Local Flavor: A restaurant on the Isle of Skye hosts you for lunch. Educational Focus: Clans and clearances.
Day 5 Educational Focus: Kilts, tartans and pipes. Independent Exploration: The rest of the morning in Oban is at your leisure. Excursion: The Slate Islands. Cross the 200-year-old Humpback Bridge over the Atlantic to the Isle of Seil. Then, take a short ferry ride to Easdale Island, a charming island where cars are not allowed. Visit the Fold Museum that replicates a 19th-century quarrier’s cottage.
Day 6 Depart Oban for Stirling. Excursion: Loch Lomond and the pathways of Rob Roy MacGregor. En route, travel via the Trossachs National Park, where you’ll see beautiful Loch Lomond. At the Gateway Centre, explore the interactive exhibit and learn the truth about the hero, Rob Roy. Excursion: Stirling. Discover the highlights of Stirling, including the spectacular castle and the William Wallace Monument. Upon arrival in Stirling, check into the Stirling Highland Hotel.
Day 7 Excursion: St. Andrews and Dundee. St. Andrews is the birthplace of golf, and home to the highly regarded University of St. Andrews and the ruins of a 12th-century castle. In the city of Dundee, there’s time for a stroll and shopping. Educational Focus: Meet the Highlanders.
Day 8 Educational Focus: Contemporary Scotland. Excursion: Edinburgh. Visit one of Europe’s most distinguished capitals. Stroll the Royal Mile, Old Town and High Street. Tour the Royal Park of Holyrood and Edinburgh Castle, the city’s signature landmark.
Day 9 Independent Exploration: The day is free for your individual interests. This evening, attend a graduation ceremony and farewell reception followed by dinner featuring a Scottish singalong.
Day 10 Transfer to the Glasgow airport for the return flight(s) to your gateway city. (Provided for Air Package participants only.) Note: Itinerary schedule may change due to local conditions. Many excursions in this program involve an element of walking as some of the finest attractions are located in areas not closely accessible by motorcoach.

Cost: $2,695 per person, land only. Optional air package available.
