Life in Saxony Along the Elbe River

April 3-11, 2009

From the splendid castles of Prague and Bohemia’s captivating beauty to the medieval river towns of Saxony, immerse yourself in the incomparable treasures and timeless traditions of the Elbe River on this fascinating journey to the Czech Republic and Germany. From Prague, cruise along the River Elbe aboard the deluxe M.V. Frederick Chopin through enchanting landscapes of hillside villages, clifftop castles and verdant woodlands. Tour the imposing medieval fortifications of Königstein Castle; marvel at the Baroque splendors of Dresden and walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther along the streets of historic Wittenberg. Throughout the program, enjoy specially arranged cultural enhancements, including a private beer tasting, a demonstration of porcelain craftsmanship in Meissen and an exclusive Village Forum with local residents to discuss life in this renowned region.

Seven-night cruise will include Prague, Czech Republic, to Potsdam, Germany, with calls at Leitmeritz, Czech Republic, and Bad Schandau (Königstein), Dresden, Meissen, Wittenberg and Magdeburg, Germany.

The following tours and excursions are led by expert local guides: Afternoon walking tour of Prague through the Staré Mesto (Old Town) to Josefov (old Jewish Quarter) and to the historic Charles Bridge; Tour of the impressive medieval fortifications of Königstein Castle, overlooking the Elbe River; City tour of Dresden, the “Florence of the North,” including a guided visit to Zwinger Palace and the Semper Opera House; Walking tour of Meissen and Albrechtsberg Castle; Visits in Wittenberg to Martin Luther’s house and St. Mary’s Church, featuring the 16th-century altar by Lucas Cranach; Walking tour of Magdeburg featuring the Gothic Cathedral of Sts. Catherine and Maurice.
