Greece – Athens and the Island of Poros

Steeped in mythology and legend, Greece has been a muse to artists and writers for centuries. The magic of this ancient land is yours to discover. Explore the priceless treasures of Athens from the world-renowned Acropolis to the fashionable Plaka district. On the idyllic island of Poros, walk along charming, sea-scented streets and admire a breathtaking panorama of sun-drenched hills and sapphire waters. Examine the ruins of the palace at Mycenae and visit a local winery. See dramatic Nauplion, the former capital of Greece; marvel at the theater in Epidauros; and enjoy the cosmopolitan island of Hydra. Witness the glory of Greece—both past and present—on this exciting travel adventure.
Day-by-Day Itinerary*
Day 1 Depart your gateway city for Athens, Greece. (Flight provided for Air Package participants only.)
Day 2 Transfer by motorcoach to the Athens Plaza Hotel. (Transfer provided for Air Package participants only.)
Independent Exploration: The afternoon is yours to explore or relax after your journey.
Day 3 Excursion: Athens City Tour. See the Academy, University, National Library and the Pan-Athenian Stadium, site of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Then, visit the city’s most famous site: the Acropolis, crowned with its magnificent Parthenon.
Local Flavor: Lunch today is at a local restaurant in the shadow of the Acropolis. This afternoon, transfer to the island of Poros. Upon arrival, check into the Hotel New Aegli.
Tonight, enjoy a welcome reception and dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 Educational Focus: Classical Greece—Birthplace of Western Civilization.
Excursion: Mycaenae. Journey to Mycaenae, which was once a powerful, ancient kingdom. See the impressive Lion’s Gate and explore the ancient city. Then, visit a nearby winery to sample some of the renowned regional varietals.
Local Flavor: Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
Local Flavor: Tonight, enjoy an introduction to Greek dancing during a traditional dinner at the hotel.
Day 5 Excursion: Poros Orientation Walk. Stroll the charming streets of Poros Town, lined with whitewashed houses. Walk through St. George Square, past bustling shops along the waterfront, and arrive at the museum filled with archaeological treasures.
Educational Focus and Local Flavor: Meet the People.
Independent Exploration: This afternoon provides free time to explore charming Poros Town on your own.
Educational Focus: Greek History.
Day 6 Excursion: Nauplion & Epidauros. Discover coastal Nauplion, situated on a rocky peninsula jutting out into the Argolic Gulf. From a maze of narrow, winding streets, admire the prominent profile of Palamidi Citadel, which zigzags across a hilltop ridge. Continue to Epidauros, whose fourth-century theater boasts perfect acoustics and is still used today for performances.
Local Flavor: Tonight, enjoy Greek music, dancing and entertainment, along with a traditional Greek dinner.
Day 7 Excursion: Hydra. Cruise to Hydra, an island known as a stylish bohemian mecca in the 1950s—it is still considered to be the most fashionable Saronic Isle. Distinctive for its architecture, rugged terrain and vibrant colors, Hydra’s lovely waterfront is lined with many lively cafés and shops.
Local Flavor: Lunch is served at a local taverna in Hydra.
Educational Focus: Perspectives of Contemporary Greece.
Day 8 Educational Focus: A View of Greek Art.
Independent Exploration: Today is at leisure to pursue your own interests.
This evening, join your fellow travelers for a special farewell reception, followed by a graduation ceremony and farewell dinner at the hotel.
Day 9 This morning, transfer to Athens and check into the Athens Plaza Hotel.
Local Flavor: A delicious lunch is served at a local taverna.
Independent Exploration: The remainder of the day is free to explore the city, shop or relax.
Day 10 Transfer to the Athens airport for the return flight to your gateway city. (Transfer and flight provided for Air Package participants only.)
