Designed for recent Auburn graduates, this eight-day trip offers a leisurely tour of the Costa Rican landscape. From active volcanoes to pink shell beaches, exotic birds and playful monkeys to jungle-canopied walks—experience all that Costa Rica has to offer.
This land package includes: seven nights at first-class hotels with private bath/shower (double occupancy); daily breakfasts (B) as per itinerary (below); one dinner (D) as per itinerary; two lunches (L) as per itinerary; private tour director for the entire duration of the tour; all scheduled sightseeing; Poas Volcano National Park; La Paz Waterfall Gardens; Tabacon Hot Springs; Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge; local taxes and service charges; services of a local host. Optional excursions available.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1—Flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel. Meet for a welcome cocktail and orientation with your tour host.
Day 2—Poas Volcano & La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Enjoy a relaxing drive through the beautiful coffee plantations and mountains of the Alajuela Province to the Poas Volcano. One of the most spectacular volcanoes in Costa Rica, it is also one of the biggest geysers in the world. Take in more scenery en route to the most beautiful waterfall in Costa Rica, La Paz. Join a guided tour of the park’s butterfly garden, the largest butterfly observatory in the world! Take time to observe the amazing hummingbird garden before enjoying a buffet lunch. (B, L)
Day 3—San Jose-Arenal. This morning, travel to the Arenal region. We check into our hotel, which offers a breathtaking view of the majestic volcano as it erupts rocks, fire and lava over its upper slopes. Observe the sunset over Arenal Lake before surrendering to an evening at the hot springs of Tabacon, with its soothing bath of waterfalls and natural pools. Look out for the possibility of exploding, sparkling red, yellow and orange lava flows from the volcano. (B,D)
Day 4—Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. Today, drive through beautiful landscape and reach the river Rio Frio. After a welcome drink, board the motorboat for a slow ride to the National Wildlife Refuge of Cano Negro, located in Los Chiles. The fauna and flora of this tropical forest refuge attracts scientists, students, birdwatchers and nature lovers. (B, L)
Day 5—Arenal-Tamarindo Beach. After breakfast, depart the Arenal lake area up to Canas and continue north to Tamarindo Beach on the Pacific Ocean. After check-in at our beach hotel, relax and enjoy the hotel facilities, explore Tamarindo town or watch the sunset on the beach. (B)
Day 6—Tamarindo Beach. Enjoy a day at leisure on the beach. Consider taking an optional snorkeling tour or join a one-day surf camp. Your host will also be able to arrange a deep-sea fishing trip. (B)
Day 7—Tamarindo Beach. Spend this leisure day on the beach or join an optional Carobici River Float tour. This trip is an all-day adventure floating down the beautiful Corobici River, leading into the Tempisque River Basin. We leave early in the morning and travel through the Guanacaste countryside to the town of Canas. Board a raft down the gentle Corobici River and float for two hours, seeing a variety of exotic birds and tropical wildlife. After lunch we stop to see wildcats on a private reserve. On the way back, we pass through the “White City” of Liberia and view the unique adobe construction of the capital city of Guanacaste. (B)
Day 8—Depart. Transfer to the International Airport in Liberia. (B)
