Heartfelt Sympathy to the Virginia Tech Community

"The Auburn family extends our heartfelt sympathy to the Virginia Tech community for the incomprehensible tragedy that occurred on the campus of this fine institution. Virginia Tech, like Auburn, is a land-grant University, and its leaders have always been gracious with their time when we call upon them to discuss campus programs, academics and research. In the days and months ahead, our thoughts and prayers are with Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and their families."

"Having lived in Virginia for six years, I was lucky enough to make a few Hokie friends. When AU played VT in the Sugar Bowl, my Hokie friend, Cathy, and I would IM back and forth at various times of the game. There was a time when we were set to play Tech in Auburn one year and Blacksburg the next where we hoped we could meet and attend together with our friends, Cathy and Brett. I very much wanted to see the place where they had spent their college lives, and I also wanted to share my Auburn with them. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts will no longer allow this to happen. I have other friends in VA who, even if they did not attend Tech, have some ties to Blacksburg and are devastated by what happened there. Virginia is a beautiful place and Tech is a shining star. I love my Hokie friends, and share in their grief over what has happened. I love Auburn with all my heart, and know they love Tech the same way. I want them to know they are not alone in their suffering."

"Sunday 4/22 -- I have just returned home from visiting my daughter, a sophomore at VT. It has been a long, emotional week for everyone. But VT has felt the world's love and support. My daughter had 3 friends shot last week, 2 of them are Pi Phi sisters. They are recovering but no one will ever be the same. I can not tell you how proud I was when I saw the sympathy board from Auburn. It truly touched my heart as well as many other hearts. The Auburn Board is displayed in the middle of the Drill field which is in the middle of campus and next to Norris Hall. There are a dozen boards set up for students and friends to sign. The AU Board is in the middle of all these boards. Tech and AU are so much alike. I couldn't be prouder to be a part of both."

We first met in New Orleans, at the last Sugar Bowl played before Hurricane Katrina. Hokies and Tigers celebrated a great game before, during and after the actual contest, and a friendship was struck between the universities and their fan bases. I was personally impressed with the graciousness and decency that I encountered from Tigers. The following is a thank-you chit I've posted on several websites. It particularly applies to the Auburn University family. War Eagle!

Ladies and gentlemen,
Whether you chose to wear our admittedly gaudy but wholly beloved school colors today, or you posted a message of condolence on one of thousands of websites, or you're a sports franchise wearing our logo, or you comforted a Hokie you know...thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you so very very much. Virginia Tech is a very large school. For many people, there aren't too many degrees of separation before one arrives at a Virginia Tech connection. I'm an alumnus in Northern Virginia, which has an enormous Hokie contingent, and today was a veritable sea of orange and maroon on people and cars and churches and buildings. The pride is impossible to ignore. We will get through this...in time. The outpouring of emotional support -- most especially from our traditional rivals in UVA and WVU -- has been extraordinarily heartening. Virginia Tech is a special place, like your school is special to you. While the support and well-wishing demonstrated from individuals and colleague institutions all over the world has been tremendous...pray that you never ever have to go through what we Hokies have been going through. No amount of publicity -- and I apologize for using that crass term -- is worth this pain, the indescribable feeling that the hallowed halls you walked, the Hokie Stone edifices which educated you, are permanently stained with Hokie blood shed in the most senseless fashion conceivable. Your grief will contain a host of emotions including sorrow, anger, confusion and depression. Your family ,friends and clergy will be your best support system. But, if your depression continues or seems to be controling your life, please seek professional help. I am sure your college system has resources to help you. They seem to be looking for an answer to WHY and want to place blame on someone. The blame solely rests on Cho Sung-Hui.
