A 1988 graduate of Auburn University, Harold Melton was appointed to the Georgia Supreme Court in 2005 by Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue. He previously had served as Perdue’s executive counsel, representing the governor on legal issues in state government. Melton helped safeguard Georgia’s interests in water rights disputes with Alabama and Florida, and actively participated in efforts to advance the delivery of criminal justice services in the state. Melton also worked in the Georgia Department of Law for 11 years, dealing with issues ranging from the creation of the Georgia Lottery Corp. to the administration of Georgia's tobacco settlement. At Auburn, Melton served as the Student Government Association’s first black president. He was also involved in Campus Crusade, Spades and Mortar Board during his undergraduate years. Melton earned a law degree from the University of Georgia in 1991; served as a volunteer leader for Young Life Ministries for 11 years; serves on the board of Atlanta Youth Academies; and directs Southwest Christian Fellowship Church’s teen ministry. He lives in Atlanta with his wife, Kimberly, and their three children.
