Program
This program offers a unique opportunity to join an "intergenerational conversation" between continuing education alumni and today's Auburn students on the most crucial political issues concerning Alabama, the United States, and the entire world community. Alumni will be able to audit the online course "Global Political Economy, POLI 1020" presented by the Alma Holladay Professor of Political Science, Dr. Ted Becker. Dr. Becker, who has authored 14 books, is a former recipient of the Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award that is presented by the Auburn Alumni Association each year.
Alumni participants in this class will be able to watch live lectures in real time via streaming video—which will also be archived so that they can be accessed at any time by the auditors. Since the auditors will be "virtual college students at Auburn," they will be using the same Blackboard online educational system as today's Auburn student body. This will permit them to have live electronic Discussion with an actual Honors section, an online section of today's Auburn undergraduates, and the professor any time and any day or night--about the required readings
Ted Becker is a lawyer, with his J.D. from Rutgers and a political scientist, with his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Earlier in his career, he was on the staff of the Attorney General of New Jersey and a consumer research analyst for Benton and Bowles Advertising Agency on Madison Avenue in New York City.
The subject of this course is a historical, philosophical, and comparative analysis of current and potential future problems and crises in America's and the world's political economic situation.
Midterm and Final Examinations
Lucky you. You don't have to take them.
Live classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. CST; January 11, 2011 – May 6, 2011. Alumni auditors can watch it at that time and even email questions or comments during the seminar. You can do the reading and engage in discussion any time you want.
At your home; in your office; on an I-Pad—but please, not while driving.
Class participation requires only a basic knowledge of using a computer, internet access, speakers and the purchase of the first digital textbook in the field of Political Economy. The title of this textbook is The Last, Lost Empire by Ted Becker, 2nd edition, and is available online. What you will be purchasing is a book in digital form—on a computer interactive CD. It is full of weblinks, videos, illustrations, maps, and music and costs $45—a real bargain for today's college textbooks. If you don't like to read a long book online, once you have the CD with your own password on it, you send that to the publisher by email and request the free print copy. That will be sent to you free by Priority Mail. ($10 from each purchase will benefit the Auburn Alumni Association)
