Birmingham-Jefferson and Shelby County
alumni clubs to merge
AUBURN—The Auburn Alumni Association’s Birmingham-Jefferson County and Shelby County chapters are merging to form the Greater Birmingham Auburn Club. The Auburn Alumni Association (AAA) estimates 23,000-25,000 Auburn alumni live within Jefferson and Shelby counties. The chapters’ combined membership, which numbered 1370 in 2006 before the merger, will raise Auburn University’s profile in the Birmingham area and improve both groups’ efforts to raise money for student scholarships, says club president Mark Pelham. The club’s goal is to gain 2,500 members by the end of 2007 which excites Debbie Shaw, VP of Alumni Affairs and Executive Director of the AAA. “The Auburn Alumni Association is thrilled with the goals the club is striving to obtain,” Shaw stated.
The Greater Birmingham Auburn Club funds five academic scholarships for deserving AU students in Jefferson and Shelby counties, and helps support a number of student organizations, including AU’s cheerleading and mascot programs.
